Despite the invention of a counting machine, by the time the 1880 census was tabulated, it was almost 1890. Dealing with so much data remained a problem until the late 1940s, when the Census Bureau commissioned the first civilian computer. The Roadrunner is one of my fav. old cartoons. Geico did a good job w/ their newest advert.
Funny thing: when I used to drive down to Denton (n. of Dallas) a lot, there was a little spot in the road w/ a gypsum plant called "Acme". I always meant to take a photo of the sign.
(and in case anyone doesn't catch the reference, the stuff the Coyote used to try to kill the Roadrunner was from Acme)
