Herd of Goats

Well, I'm sure you've herd of goats, but if you haven't, you've at least seen them now...a LOT of them.

These are the "rent-a-goats" Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory uses to keep weeds and underbrush clear.

My friend Sally has goats. ( a chat friend) She posts photos, names them, bottle feeds them.

We used to keep goats, a few of them. My dad traded something for several of them, think it was an old car he bought for next to nothing and got running. We couldn't keep them in the pen, but they stayed close to home and food and water, so we quit worrying about them running off. Then one morning I sat down at the breakfast table and saw them standing on my car. Dad thought it was funny...until the next morning when they were standing on his and mom's car! A couple were traded for a generator and the other one...well, he tasted good.

As you know, I love webcams and HenCam.com has a camera in her goat stall. It's the least favorite of all three and she recently announced she was doing away with it and putting another one up in a chicken run instead. Just as well, you couldn't see much b/c they were outside most of the time. She writes about them a lot; the most recent article was Goat Minerals w/ some great photos of them. I've been watching the cam in the afternoons when she or one of her family goes out to feed or shut the hens in for the night and they're SO jealous of one another...they start rarin' up and head-butting ea. other, so funny.

One more thing: not sure if wethers (neutered goats) like those at the HenCam lady's place do it, but mature billy goats bend their heads down to their bellies and pee on their beards...it's supposed to be attractive to the lady goats. I'd try it, but I can't grow a beard...which is just as well, because I'm not that flexible.
