The Oracle of Bacon

Ever heard of or played the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game? It works on the premise that everyone in Hollywood has worked with Kevin Bacon or worked with someone who has worked with Kevin Bacon and can be linked in six steps or less.

Well, here's a great online version:

The premise is simple;  input the name of an actor/actress and click the button "Find Link" to see how he/she is connected to Kevin Bacon.  According to the site, any link of four or more is rare.  I would agree, because I've tried and tried and never done better than three.  Two links has been my average.  I've thought of some obscure films, B-movies and used the names of people who had insignificant roles in those flicks and have always been disappointed with the results.

Give it a go and tell us how you've done!

The Moon Survival Challenge

From the site:

Imagine you are returning to the base ship on the sunlit side of the moon after carrying out a 72-hour exploration trip. Your small spacecraft has crash-landed about 200 miles from the base ship. You need to reach the base ship, in addition to your spacesuit, you were able to salvage the items listed below. Using what you know about the moon, rate each item in the list according to how important it would be in getting you back to the base ship.

Best Oscar Movie

With the Oscars coming up, ABC News has come up with an NCAA basketball-type bracket which allows you to rank the best Oscar winners over the past 64 years.

Easy to do; hover over each entry with your cursor to see a synopsis of each movie, then click on one to send it on to the second round. Do one side, then go over to the other. (there will be more of the bracket and you'll need to scroll down to see all the choices)

There were only a few movies I had not seen and coincidentally enough, the very first choice I had to make was between two of them (Argo and The Artist). I went ahead and voted, not only because I had to in order to complete the first round, but I had read enough about both of those movies to make an informed choice.

Other choices were much more difficult to make, because I HAD seen both and loved each but had to make a choice. (such as Patton and Midnight Cowboy) Difficult decisions aside, it was a fun thing to do. The next round will begin Feb. 6th and I'm looking forward to continue voting and to eventually see which movie gets the most votes.

Topical Typing Trivia

Today is my h.s. typing/business teacher's birthday and in honor of her, here's this bit of trivia.
typewriter

From The Old Farmer's Almanac:

What is the fastest speed on record (words per minute) for typing text?

There are three different words per minute (wpm) records -- for the manual typewriter, the electric typewriter, and the personal computer keyboard. On a manual typewriter, the world record is 176 wpm, and on an electric typewriter it is 216. In an official test in 1991, Gregory Arakelian of Virginia set the personal computer record with 158 wpm.

Sure beats my puny 54 WPM

Let Me Google That For You

From the site:

For all those people who find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than Google it for themselves.

Ever get annoyed by someone asking a question and you KNOW they are smart enough to do a search for it on their own?  You know they're only doing it to:  a. make you waste your time, b. pick apart the information at the link or c. impeach the source.

Instead, make THEM do the work and have a laugh at them at the same time.  Make THEM waste their time and then you can pick apart the information or impeach the source...or better yet, ignore them after leaving the link.

Just input the search terms, then you'll be given a link to leave for the troll (or lazy butt) so he/she can do their own research.

(one of the best replies I ever saw on a msg. board was someone asking where another poster got their information.  "Look it up yourself." he said. "I'm not your link whore.")

Try it out!

Cursor Invisible

How good is your hand-eye coordination?  How about when your eye can't see what the hand is doing?

Try this fun game Cursor Invisible.  Click the start button, then start clicking the circles.  After a few seconds, your cursor will go invisible and you have to keep trying to accurately click on the circles.  The game continues as long as you successfully click on a circle but ends when you miss.

I just played a half-dozen times and my last (and best) score was 43.

Zamboni Google Doodle

Zamboni Google Doodle

(say that three times really fast)

Maybe Google is celebrating the return of ice hockey, but it's also the birthday of Frank Zamboni, the inventor of his namesake, the iconic ice resurfacer.

The game is easy to play; Press the arrow "start" button and a little skater will come out, skate around and leave a trail on the ice.

Then, using the arrow keys, drive the Zamboni around to resurface the ice.

Not an exciting game, but like most doodles done with a pencil and paper, it's simply a way to pass time.

As if there's not enough ways to do that on the Internet.

Here's another time waster, but at least it will increase your trivia knowledge:
