Moths of the Texas Panhandle

I stumbled across this video after seeing an article about hummingbird moths and wondering if they were found in these parts. Back when I worked on drilling rigs, all sorts of insects and moths would be attracted to the lights of the rig at night, sometimes so thick around the lights on the floor that they blocked out most of the light and it was hard to see and often far-too-easy to have one fly into your mouth.

I remember one guy I worked with insisting they were hummingbirds, but those are fairly rare up in this part of the country.  Another guy I worked with would catch the huge moths, unroll their "nose" with a pencil, then tape it inside someone's locker.  When he opened it up the next morning, it was always funny to see him startled by the moth frantically fluttering at the guy's eye level.

(EDIT to add: funny to see the guy scared by a moth, but I always felt sorry for the moth; it was cruel, even though I doubt the moth had a very long lifespan.)

My landlady's son, the younger brother of a classmate, was a sophomore one summer when the moths were prolific around the rig and had to do the same project his brother and I had to do at the same age;  catch 50 different insects and pin them to a board and label them.  I took the young man a lunch box full of moths and asst. other insects I caught one night and he later told me he had over 70 different types of insects and got an "A" for the project!

I used to have some Four O'Clock plants by my porch and during the summer, moths would gather nectar out of the flowers that opened in the late afternoon and stayed open until sunrise the next morning.  I had an old black cat that absolutely loved those moths;  he grew tired of playing with them and discovered he liked the taste.  He wouldn't eat the entire thing, but I would find just the head and wings all over the place, even inside where he had brought them in through the cat flaps. (along with lizards, garden snakes, birds and all sorts of creatures.)

New Penny, Old Results

I tried to do the penny thing again, this time w/ a bright new one, but I couldn't duplicate the better results I had in previous attempts. -sigh-

I probably shouldn't post such crappy pictures.

They're yellow, I'm sure of that...

I *think* these are Engelmann daisies, according to a Texas wildflower website.

Scientific Name: (Engelmannia pinnatifida)
Definition: Part of the Sunflower Family (Asteraceae), the Engelmann daisy is a favorite for grazing with livestock and much of the plant has been eaten out of the grasslands, prairies and savannah that makes up so much of Texas. Grows upright to spreading with stems stout and woody, one to several. Flower heads 1-2" across, usually 8 petals. Flowers found few to several ending in clusters. Grows in all parts of state except Northeast. Blooms February - November.

On the other hand, they may very well be:

Damianita

Scientific Name: (Chrysactinia mexicana)
Definition: Damianita is a strongly scented, leafy shrub growing 1 - 2 feet. Flowers are golden yellow, 1 inch across on slender stems at the end of branches. Blooms June - October.

Both look very much alike to me, but it has more petals than what the first one described.

Taken on a dirt road just off of Hwy 60 in front of the Arrington ranch house (now a bed and breakfast). Some of the scenes from the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away were filmed there. (photos of that to follow!)

Sunflower at Night

Not a particularly good photo, but I put this one in just for my friend Beary.

Sink Your Teeth Into This Huge Flower Post

A few weeks back I was getting some gasoline at the station right at the entrance to Wal-Mart and noticed some lovely flowers in the yard of of the dentist's office (Dr. Black, I presume) just across the street.

They were closed that day, or closed early, so I didn't get permission to tiptoe through the tulips (or even prowl thru the petunias, much less blunder thru the begonias, peruse the periwinkles....I could go on with this, y'know. On and on and on and on...)

It didn't stop me, though. I'm not afraid of the Carnation Cops.

I AM afraid of the dentist, but that's a whole 'nuther story.

I like this one; if you click the photo and view the largest size, you can see the green "bottle" fly on the flower. Those'll bite the pee-waddin' outta you.

The flies, not the flowers.

I like this one, not that I think it's "good" photography, but like the two flower friends, side-by-side.

This one would be me, a loner. I'm a bit more drab, however.

A particular favorite of mine, the triplets.

I haven't a clue what the names of these things are. If anyone will post their names, I will come back and edit.

I also like this one, the first flower amongst all the neighboring buds.

They're all lovely; I only wish I had taken better photos.

I'm TRYIN' to get better, honest.

I couldn't wait to get home and download these and many more to my computer, then I went in there and flossed.

I Keep Trying

Trying some more of my "macro" shots.

Hmmm....these are such tiny flowers, maybe I should put some perspective into the shot:

Have to click the pic for larger view, but there's an ant on one of the flowers.

Big Blooming Buds

This reminds me of the man-eating flower in "Little Shop of Horrors".

The old one with Jack Nicholson, not the new one with Steve Martin.

Do NOT blow on this!
