I was taking out my trash yesterday evening when I noticed a splash of color on the dumpster down the alley.
It was a clown doll, in fairly good shape, looking incongruous amongst the nasty dumpster, the tall weeds and the abandoned and run-down houses at the end of the block.
The sight made me sad for some reason, and my first inclination was to rescue the doll, at least throw it in with the rest of the discarded items, save it from such an embarrassing postion.
As I knelt down to take the photos, the doll's smile gave me pause. I tilted my head to look into its face.

Looks handmade too. Bet it did make some little kid happy.
Colleen is scared of clowns. Not sure why. First time it happened she was about 4 and we were at the Lee Country Fair ( tiny thing, one day, benefits the community church and the local grange)
Anyway, the local McD's offered to have "Ronald" make a guest appearance at 1 pm. So the fair brought in a flat hay wagon for a stage, a portable sound systems and a few chairs for the grownups.
Colleen and her cousin Alice were all excited and plopped themselves down on the ground, center of the front row.
As soon as the guy playing Ronald showed up I could tell something was up with Coll. My normally independent girl was cluching onto her cousin, she kept looking back over her should to make eye contact with me.
Finally she jumped up and came straight back to me to sit on my lap. When I asked her what was wrong she said he just freaked her out.
She's still not fond of clowns to this day. Last year at the fair when we picked up the program she said to me, "Oh good, Ronald's not going to be here this year." lol.
I can understand your daughters fear Barb in a way as when I was small I had a slight uncomfy feeling around clowns too ! I can't explain why I just always thought they kind of looked eerie and even though I didnt show anyone my fears I felt it inside, the strange thing was I didnt feel this when I was looked at the similar type of toy to a clown what was then called a GollyWog ( before the days of 'political correctness ' was brought about , they just had something different to the clown and I always wanted one but never got one .
Its so strange though isnt it how some things can bring happiness and pleasure to a child then total fear to another, I was just thinking to myself how quite often adults kind of wave toys in front of babies faces to amuse them when they are very young , maybe its just the exaggerated expressions of the clowns with the huge mouth and nose and sometimes crosses for eyes that scare the kids, I have often seen babies get wild eyed with shock at it as the parents stand there thinking the kids are loving it . just a thought though and not true to all
Aw, bless her heart. I always thought fear of clowns was some sort of joke, esp. due to the Seinfeld episode, but I've since found out it's a definite, legitimate phobia.
The horror movies w/ clowns don't help that, either, I would think.
I'm not scared of Ronald, but I AM scared of McDonald's. -grin-
Thanks for posting, both of you!
