When Second Was Best

Did you know The Beatles lost out to Brian Poole and The Tremeloes when the two groups auditioned in 1962 for a contract at the London studios of Decca Records? Reportedly, Decca's decision was based upon location; The Tremeloes were from the London area, making them more accessible than the Liverpool-based Beatles.

Pretty good harmonies, I'm surprised I never heard of them before. The lead singer on "Dance" doesn't seem to have a Brit accent at all, while the singers in the back most def. do.
Wonder if he was American?

I didn't think I knew of them either, but certainly recognized the two songs I posted. I think he is British. Reading about them, I found they were still around not too long ago, but the lead singer had quit the group not long after that tune, I believe.

"Do You Love Me" wasn't originally done by them; it was written for The Temptations, but instead was given to The Contours, and went to #3 on the charts in '62 and again in 1988!(the last time b/c of it being in the movie Dirty Dancing) It's been featured in several other movies, too.
