Dealey Plaza Webcam

A "bump" of this post from over a yr. ago to note the anniversary of the JFK assassination.

Another webcam I frequently visit is the Dealey Plaza Webcam in the southeast corner window of the sixth floor in the former Texas School Book Depository in Dallas. This is the view from the window from which an assassin fired the shots that killed President John F. Kennedy and severely wounded Texas Governor John Connally as the presidential motorcade drove through Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963.

Here is the Google Earth street view looking back towards the sixth floor. The white "X" on the road marks the spot (the black arrow points to it) where Kennedy was shot.  The black arrow at the top right of the building points toward the storage room where Oswald was perched and fired the shots. It is now the Sixth Floor Museum.

Another street view of the grassy knoll where many think some or all of the shots were fired.

A photo taken that day:

During the day there are almost always tourists and sightseers and I find myself holding my breath while watching someone running out to have their photo taken on the "X".  (the person in the graphic below is hard to see because I had to enlarge it, but they're right in the center of the screen shot.)  This was at around six p.m. and even though the rush hour traffic has lessened, the road was still busy and they quickly had to scamper back as so to not get run over by cars speeding around the corner.

Niagra Falls Webcam

UPDATE: A new cam with a better view.

View the webcam at Niagra Falls and turn up your speakers because you can also hear the awesome sound of the water.  Right now, there's a lot of ice and "steam" that obscures the view, but it's still very impressive.   There's also one to view both falls at once as well as one showing the Lower Niagra River.

Doggy Daycare Cam

(click pic f/ larger view)

Another favorite webcam I often visit.  From the website:

Destined to become the most paw-pular webcam views around, visit The Canine Club and Spa in Minnesota and watch live as the dogs romp around the yard. From playing fetch with their two-legged friends to hitting the pool for some doggy paddle practice, viewers will be left panting from the non-stop excitement.

OK, it's not exactly riveting, but I do find it entertaining.  It's fun to watch the dogs romp around and play with each other (and I guess they have to be temperament-tested, spayed or neutered before being accepted as "customers") but you can also see the normal doggy behavior that's not so cute,  such as sniffing each others butts, peeing on things and other dogs smelling where other dogs have peed and then peeing on the same spot.

Elephant Cam

From the website: Visit a regularly frequented waterhole and the open plains of Africa with live streaming webcam views. Situated in the busiest elephant corridor that joins the Chobe National Park and the Hwange National Park, Camp Kuzuma is a private and exclusive safari lodge situated in the pristine Kazuma Forest reserve in the Chobe region of Botswana. Visitors will have the chance to see an abundance of wildlife, including elephants and lions.

Unlike most cams, it has a microphone and even if there's no large animals getting a drink, it's cool to listen to the birds and the wind blowing. I've never seen any lions around the waterhole, and usually there's not much going on, but this was the scene a few hours ago:

Actually, just before I decided to post this, I checked back in and it's pretty much still the same scene, although the elephants have moved a few feet to the left. Yes,I say "elephants" because behind the one elephant is another, smaller one - the baby of the larger elephant, I reckon.

This was the view earlier this a.m.

If you're disappointed in not being able to see the baby, don't feel lonely; I watched the cam for an hour earlier and only got small glimpses of it, mostly its trunk.

Here's some consolation:

Giraffe Cam

One of my favorite webcams and I try to visit at least every few days.  This cam is of the Masai Giraffe Exhibit at the Greenville, SC zoo where you can watch the mom, Autumn, and dad, Walter and their son Kiko.  If the giraffes aren't in their stalls, then they're most likely out in the paddock, which also has a cam (link at bottom of page) and they also have an archived video of giraffe births on YouTube

BTW, I'm a giraffe.

Vegas Wedding Chapel Cam

Some guys spend their Saturdays mowing the lawn or working on their cars while others sit on the couch and watch college football all day.

Me?  I sometimes tune into the Vegas Wedding Chapel Cam.

The Elvis impersonator/minister is singing "Love Me Tender" right now.

Viva Las Vegas

One of the webcams I have bookmarked is the one of the iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign.  During daylight hours, there's almost always a fair-sized crowd waiting to have their pictures taken with the sign in the background.  (and I've actually seen people taking photos of the sign at midnight or later, not as silly as it sounds considering how well-lit the sign and surroundings are.)

Here's a screen shot from just a few minutes ago and I caught the subject in mid-jump. (it's a little fuzzy b/c of the motion, much like I expect the actual photo will be)

I've never been to Vegas, but every time I view the webcam, I always think of the Elvis Presley musical Viva Las Vegas. I remember seeing it at the theater shortly after it came out - I must have been about ten years old and I must have also been on the cusp of puberty because Elvis didn't impress me, nor did the race scenes and cars, but because I was quite impressed by Ann-Margret. (Actually, she STILL impresses me.)  She's not in the video below, but here's the title song from the movie:

I like that, but ZZ Top also did a great cover of the tune.

Here's a video of Ann-Margret in the movie. I believe it was the beginning of my life-long admiration of women's legs, especially when they're in tights or leotards.

San Jacinto Monument Cam

From the site: Experience views of La Porte, Texas from the perspective of the San Jacinto Monument.  Standing more than 567 feet tall, enjoy amazing views of the city, busy waterway and the Battleship Texas.  The monument houses the San Jacinto Museum of History, which serves as the gateway to Texas culture.

Honey Bee Cam

One out of three bites of food, or one-third of our diet, is linked to the direct work of the honey bee, which makes it imperative that we find out what has been causing a collapse in honeybee colonies. Research now points to a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids being responsible.

Cat Cafe Cam

From the site:

Purina ONE is launching the first ever North American Cat Café in New York City, creating an environment of wellness where visitors learn about the 28 Day Challenge, share their experiences, interact with experts and connect with adoptable cats and other cat lovers. Learn more at www.PurinaONE.com/CatCafe and join the conversation with #CatCafe.

Just discovered this and am not sure if it's going to be a permanent thing because the cam isn't fixed and was going from cat-to-cat and often getting blocked by people in the way. (not sure about you, but I don't care a thing about a "back of people's head webcam")   From the looks of some folks on the street looking through the window, you'd think they never saw a cat before.

HenCam

A recent discovery, I really enjoy getting updates from the site in my reader and I try to visit every day I can to view the various webcams.  The owner of the site is a lady who lives in a small town outside of Boston.

There's an outside cam (pictured above), where you can find the hens on most days. It's fun to watch them peck and scratch the ground and I find it as entertaining as watching an aquarium full of fish.  There's also inside cameras, one in a separate barn for chickens and another for the same chickens pictured in the above screen shot.  There's also a GoatCam (actually two, one for inside and another outside that will switch between them on a motion sensor) that shows the activities of the two Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goats, Pip and Caper.

The hens also all have names, but I'm not familiar enough yet to recognize each of them.  There's a page with photos of each with their names.  If you watch long enough, you'll also see Phoebe the rabbit hopping in or out of the view.

Today's article was very interesting, about re-introducing a hen - Beulah - back into the flock.  (there really IS such a thing as a "pecking order").  Check it out;  if you like animals and especially chickens (and goats and rabbits!) you're sure to enjoy it as I do.

EGG Cam

UPDATE: (again!) There's a new clutch of eggs!

UPDATE: The University of Nebraska - Lincoln has another clutch of eggs for their 4-H EGG Cam.

These eggs were set on January 13 and should hatch in about 21 days - on or about February 3! We'll be candling live this week to see how the embryos are doing. The camera will zoom in much closer when candling. We'll post the candling date/time on Tuesday, January 19.

The eggs are from chickens bred to lay a lot of great eggs - Hy-Line Layers.
