unhearit

I was complaining on Facebook yesterday about hearing The Little Drummer Boy at the grocery store and not being able to get it out of my head - it became an "earworm".  While it eventually went away, I could have used this website.

From the site
: We created this site for those of you that have a song stuck in your head and you can't get it out no matter what you do. Using the latest in reverse-auditory-melodic-unstickification technology, we've been able to allow our users to “unhear” songs by hearing equally catchy songs. So really all we're doing is making you forget your old song by replacing it with another one... sorry.

giblets

giblets gib·lets [jib-lits] plural noun

the heart, liver, gizzard, and the like, of a fowl, often cooked separately.

There IS one more definition, classified as slang, but I didn't see it at Dictionary.com.  It was a LONG time ago during a football practice and after a play, one of my teammates was still on the ground after the play was over.  The coach leaned over the prostrate boy asking him where it hurt.  I wasn't close enough to hear the muffled answer, but the coach got up with a smile on his face.

"He'll be all right." he informed the rest of us. "He just got hit in the giblets."

That was a scene that came to mind at every Thanksgiving dinner after that.

Since the Word of the Day was more-or-less related to Thanksgiving, I'll just combine two posts into one.  I was going to write one about how many calories were in the average Thanksgiving dinner: from 3-4,000 and the average American will consume more than 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day alone, according to the Calorie Control Council. (there were other sources that cited different numbers, but I like the alliteration of that website's name)

That would take a LOT of exercise to work off that many calories!  A nice brisk walk would be better than spending the day in a gym, so check out the Walking Calories Calculator to see how far/fast you need to walk to get rid of those excess calories, or you can use the Holiday Calorie Counter to figure both the calories in your holiday meal and the amount of exercise needed to work off the meal.

I have my Thanksgiving meal already prepared.

Pathetic, huh? One good thing is that it will be ready in a minute and a half after I pop it in the microwave; another good thing is that it's only 290 calories with 9 grams of fat. I'll work that off watching the football games on TV!

Amazon Filler Item Finder

If you're like me and use Amazon but are too cheap frugal to pay for Prime and get free shipping, you'll like Amazon Filler Item Finder.  From the website:

Certain items at Amazon.com qualify for free shipping, but sometimes the purchase falls short of the minimum $35 needed to receive the free shipping. Enter the amount you need to see a list of products that qualify for free shipping.

According to the creator of this script, the site has been up for 6+ yrs. and mentioned in several other websites. (but I hadn't heard of it before).  It's a brilliant concept and even though I didn't find anything I wanted for the $8.51 worth of items I currently need in my Amazon cart to get free shipping, I bookmarked it and imagine I will use it again in the future for suggestions to bring my total up to $35 to get the free shipping.  I also again might not use any of the suggestions, but it doesn't take but a few seconds and you never know!

What's really ingenious is that each result is basically an "affiliate link" where the site owner makes a small commission on each sale for the referral.  Clever, and I wish I had thought of it. (or at least been smart enough to write the script)

Super Fast Butcher

It wouldn't do to be all-thumbs in this job, because if you were, you wouldn't have thumbs for long. (or at the least, very long thumbs)

One thing I'm wondering about, however;  why is he cutting up the meat into such tiny pieces?

Niagra Falls Webcam

UPDATE: A new cam with a better view.

View the webcam at Niagra Falls and turn up your speakers because you can also hear the awesome sound of the water.  Right now, there's a lot of ice and "steam" that obscures the view, but it's still very impressive.   There's also one to view both falls at once as well as one showing the Lower Niagra River.

360° Flying

I love flying vids and think I've seen most of them on YouTube but this is a first and I hope more videos will use this interactive format.

The camera is behind the pilot in the P-51, but use the controls in the top left hand corner to see the F-22 flying in formation for most of the flight.

Caesar Salad on a Stick

From SampleStorm comes Caesar Salad on a Stick

Servings: 8
PREP 10 mins
READY IN 10 mins

8 croutons
8 (1-inch) wedges romaine lettuce
8 (1 ounce) cubes cooked chicken
8 (1/2-inch) cubes Parmesan cheese, or to taste
8 bamboo toothpicks
8 teaspoons Caesar salad dressing

Directions Thread a crouton, romaine lettuce wedge, chicken cube, and Parmesan cheese cube onto each toothpick, respectively.

Arrange toothpicks on a serving platter and drizzle Caesar salad dressing over each.

At first I thought this was silly, then after thinking about it for a while, decided it would be perfect for a picnic.

Doggy Daycare Cam

(click pic f/ larger view)

Another favorite webcam I often visit.  From the website:

Destined to become the most paw-pular webcam views around, visit The Canine Club and Spa in Minnesota and watch live as the dogs romp around the yard. From playing fetch with their two-legged friends to hitting the pool for some doggy paddle practice, viewers will be left panting from the non-stop excitement.

OK, it's not exactly riveting, but I do find it entertaining.  It's fun to watch the dogs romp around and play with each other (and I guess they have to be temperament-tested, spayed or neutered before being accepted as "customers") but you can also see the normal doggy behavior that's not so cute,  such as sniffing each others butts, peeing on things and other dogs smelling where other dogs have peed and then peeing on the same spot.

Herd of Goats

Well, I'm sure you've herd of goats, but if you haven't, you've at least seen them now...a LOT of them.

These are the "rent-a-goats" Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory uses to keep weeds and underbrush clear.

Elephant Cam

From the website: Visit a regularly frequented waterhole and the open plains of Africa with live streaming webcam views. Situated in the busiest elephant corridor that joins the Chobe National Park and the Hwange National Park, Camp Kuzuma is a private and exclusive safari lodge situated in the pristine Kazuma Forest reserve in the Chobe region of Botswana. Visitors will have the chance to see an abundance of wildlife, including elephants and lions.

Unlike most cams, it has a microphone and even if there's no large animals getting a drink, it's cool to listen to the birds and the wind blowing. I've never seen any lions around the waterhole, and usually there's not much going on, but this was the scene a few hours ago:

Actually, just before I decided to post this, I checked back in and it's pretty much still the same scene, although the elephants have moved a few feet to the left. Yes,I say "elephants" because behind the one elephant is another, smaller one - the baby of the larger elephant, I reckon.

This was the view earlier this a.m.

If you're disappointed in not being able to see the baby, don't feel lonely; I watched the cam for an hour earlier and only got small glimpses of it, mostly its trunk.

Here's some consolation:

The Hay Pusher

I'm not sure where this is, but I believe it's in one of the Scandinavian countries.  Where ever it is, I've watched it several times over the course of the last year or so when I first found the video.  Such a lovely young lady...and I can sit and watch somebody work for hours! -grin-

In the Days of Chicken Little

From the video description on YouTube: Alice Barker was a chorus line dancer during the Harlem Renaissance of the the 1930s and 40s. She danced at clubs such as The Apollo, Cotton Club, and Zanzibar Club, with legends including Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.

Although she danced in numerous movies, commercials and TV shows, she had never seen any of them, and all of her photographs and memorabilia have been lost over the years.

With the help of Mark Cantor of http://jazz-on-film.com we finally our hands on three "Soundies" Alice appeared in, and were able to show them to her for the very first time. She had never seen herself in motion in her life!
