The local United grocery store reduces the price of meat that's getting close dated, a little brown. The other store that was here (now closed) did the same and I found out that I preferred the taste of the "aged" meat.
I don't buy chicken or pork that's marked down, but I sometimes get some of the steaks they've reduced, usually by 50% or more. It's nice to get a lovely ribeye or t-bone for three/four bucks. I splurged and bought an Angus filet that was originally over $20 for eight bucks and change. It was delicious.
The only problem is I have to get down there just as they open because lots of other people have the same idea!
No I was far from aceing it, only 89% Not sure which ones I got wrong but I thought I did better than what I did. Nevermind though I'm still getting paid to be a meatcutter ;) LOL You're absolutely right Mike, those steaks with a few days shelf life on them have a much better taste than those bright red 'just cut' ones do. Nice if you can find them reduced like that at your store. We do the same thing, and just like in your area people come in early to get them. Agre with you to about being leery of close dated pork and chicken, only meat good aged is beef ;)

Oh yeah, I shy away from the pork and especially the chicken. I love chicken, but I don't want salmonella.
